Ram 1500: Which Should You Buy, 2019 or 2020?

Ram 1500: Which Should You Buy, 2019 or 2020?

The Ram 1500 is one of the best sellers in the half-ton truck market. But Ram isn't a company to rest on their laurels, and this most popular pickup is constantly updated and refreshed, with new releases nearly every year.

The latest 2020 model is now in the showrooms, but there are still some 2019 models to be found, on sale at the older, slightly lower prices. If you're looking for a new Ram 1500, which year's model should you choose?

Ram 1500: Which Should You Buy, 2019 or 2020?

2020 RAM 1500 vs 2019 RAM 1500: The Main Differences

Unlike some yearly updates which totally revamp a model line, the 2020 refresh was a relatively minor one. Most of the existing 2019 models are carried over with only minor changes, but several new options have been added.

The biggest difference is the addition of a diesel engine option across the entire range. This powerful powertrain can provide a huge 480lb-ft of torque, making diesel Rams some of the most sturdy workhorses available in their class.

But this extra power doesn't mean hugely expensive fuel costs. Ram estimate their Ram 1500 EcoDiesel can reach figures of 10.7L / 100km in the city and an impressive 7.3L / 100km on the highway, making this configuration an economical choice for heavy daily use.

Updated Rebel: Looks and Safety

Another notable difference is the extra stylings package now available on the Ram 1500 Rebel model. This off-road oriented truck can be fitted with the Black Appearance Group option, giving all-black wheels, skid plate, and interior fixtures for an impressive new look.

A further new Rebel package goes under the name of the Rebel Safety Group and adds active safety measures including adaptive cruise control with stop-go capability, lane departure warnings, automatic high beam headlamps, and forward collision mitigation.

2020 Ram 1500 vs 2019 Ram 1500: The Verdict

As you'd expect from a truck with the Ram 1500 pedigree, both the 2020 and 2019 models make great buys, and there's honestly not a huge amount to choose between them on many of the trims.

If you're looking for the fuel economy and high torque benefits of a powerful diesel engine, then the 2020 Ram 1500 is the obvious choice with the EcoDiesel powertrain option now available across the entire range.

Off-road enthusiasts with an eye for style will definitely appreciate the Ram 1500 Rebel with its Black Appearance Group additions, while the active safety package offers plenty of tech for not much extra cash.

But otherwise, if you can find a 2019 Ram 1500 available for a great clearance discount, then the lack of huge differences across the two model years means the 2019 release could be a bargain - if you can track one down before they're cleared out.
