Get Your Vehicle Trip-Ready.

Summer is here and, for a lot of folks, that means vacation “road-trip” time. (After all, who doesn’t need to get away from it all for a week or two, or even just a long weekend, to unwind?)

But, beware!

It’s estimated over seven million motorists will experience some kind of car trouble this summer. Many of these occurrences will happen to families on vacation and, sadly, a good number of these issues will involve relatively minor, yet preventable, problems that could have been avoided (like dead batteries, worn engine belts and flat tires).

So before you head out on a summer trip, take the time to have a pre-trip vehicle check-up. The following short list represents some of the areas that generate the most common “trip interrupting” issues.

Have your battery checked to make sure it’s putting out the required voltage. Also, make sure it’s charging at the correct rate. Overcharging can damage a battery as quickly as undercharging. High temperatures can also shorten a battery’s life as much, or even more, than cold, winter days.

Check tire pressure and tread. Uneven wear indicates it’s time for a wheel alignment and, if the wear is serious, signify it’s time for new tires. Also check for bulges and bald spots, which can quickly turn into a flat at the most inopportune moments.

As the most important safety equipment installed on your vehicle, the brakes on all four wheels should be checked for both wear and operation. You should never start out on a trip without complete confidence in your braking system.

Engine Tune-up

If your vehicle hasn’t had a tune-up in a while, this is a smart move. You’ll be especially pleased with the improved mileage achieved on long road trips. In addition to changing plugs, a thorough tune-up specialist will also inspect the condition of your drive belts and wiring … two additional vehicle “trip interrupters” that can be avoided with a simple pre-trip check-up.

In layman’s terms, this translates to Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning. These should all be working properly so you can travel in comfort. At the same time, you should also check (and replace if necessary) your cabin air filter (it will help your HVAC system operate more efficiently).

Be sure your vehicle has all the proper fluid levels. Check power steering, brake and transmission fluids, as well as engine oil, windshield washer solvent and antifreeze/coolant.

Wiper Blades and Lighting

Check interior and exterior lighting, including turn signals and warning lights. And replace worn wipers to guarantee you’ll be able to see clearly when driving through stormy conditions.

Emergency First Aid Kit

If your emergency first aid kit is low on anything, restock it before you leave. If you are in need of one, your local FCA dealership has a quality First Aid Kit (part #82214549) available which contains everything you need to perform basic first aid, including bandages, gauze, antiseptic wipes and more.

Roadside Safety Kit

If you don’t have a comprehensive Roadside Safety Kit, one is available through your local FCA dealership. It includes a safety flashlight, fleece blanket, 6-gauge jumper cables, safety triangle, flathead and Phillips screwdrivers, pliers, two bungee cords and gloves (Roadside Safety Kit, part #82213499). Also, charge up your cell phones so you’re prepared in case of an emergency, and purchase a phone charging cord that you can plug into your vehicle should a re-charge be required while driving.

Get It Done Right

In summary, don’t let an avoidable misfortune sidetrack your travels. A little pre-trip vehicle check-up can make all the difference between a pleasurable vacation and being stuck in a motel while your distressed vehicle is being serviced.

And don’t forget, the best place to have your vehicle inspected is at your local Mopar® service center. They’ll take all the worry and hassle out of your vehicle check-up and, with a Mopar service technician performing your inspection, you’ll know it’s being done right.

Why? They know your vehicle better than any technician at any other service location.

Have a pleasurable and safe trip!
